Armadillo Repellent - Armadillos scavenge after the sun has set. They are nocturnal creatures. They start by digging burrows that can be twenty five feet long, at times. This can damage the roots of shrubs, ornamentals and plants. They can dig up a whole awn in a matter of minutes. Their preferred choice of food includes beetles, earthworms, grubs, insects, caterpillars and mole crickets. A single armadillo can maintain up to a dozen burrows. Once an armadillo settles down under your property, it can create considerable damage through its frenzied digging and it can also weaken the foundation of your house.

One of the most effective armadillo repellents is pesticide. It helps in the elimination of much of their food source. There is a need of numerous applications of pesticide to drive the armadillos away but it will be achieved at a price. These pesticides could be toxic to insects that are beneficial for your yard or garden. They could also be dangerous for your children and pets. However, there are various repellents in the stores and supermarkets that include antagonists of the food source of the armadillos. Some repellents can make the surroundings undesirable for the armadillos and they may cause them to hunt for food elsewhere, away from your property.

Few repellents have a formula that does not have gel in them and they will not clog the sprayers, making it easy to apply when watering the lawns and these repellents are safe on most vegetation. The repellents can be applied to landscaped areas and lawns. They are available in stores in concentrate form that is ready to use. A tin of concentrate containing two and a half gallons would cover a landscape as vast as fifty thousand square feet. This concentrate will keep the sprayers clog free when they are of the hose end type, even in cold temperatures such as thirty three degrees Fahrenheit. It is not harmful for the vegetation. The ingredients used in such formulations will not be harmful to the plants and pets at home but they do create an environment that can be described as undesirable. It may encourage the armadillos to move away from your property.

By coating the food sources for armadillos and also the regions where they like to scavenge, you may find that there is a slight chance that they may find your yard not a safe place to stay. However, this has to be reapplied every now and then to trouble the armadillos. The application may begin with the spraying of areas of their entry. This can be followed up with those regions that are behind the entry points. It is not necessary to use excessive water. The idea is to make the soil and the food source unappetizing for armadillos.

There are various other forms of repellents for armadillos. One of them is mothballs. It is popularly known as naphthalene. It is sold in the market in both flake and ball types. The odor of these mothballs will drive the armadillos away.

One of the most effective repellents is coyote urine. Wolf or bobcat urine is also effective as a repellent. Armadillos will get scared when they start to smell the scent of big predators. They will not come near the spot where you may apply the coyote urine. This type of urine is also sold in the markets in both powder and liquid form and it may be mixed with mothballs. Such products help in creating an illusion and deter the armadillos. They will feel that coyotes are somewhere near them on your property. Granules of coyote urine are weather resistant and they are easy to apply. They can be applied twice every week to create an impact.

Castor oil serves as a repellent when it is applied in a yard when the Boca Raton armadillos try to dig in the yard soil for grubs and worms. This oil helps in keeping the grubs away. However, it is difficult to apply castor oil in large volumes.

High pitched sound machines can also be used as repellents for armadillos as they find the pitch annoying. They avoid going near it. Many companies are in the business of selling ultrasonic emitters of sound as a strategy for driving away armadillos. Though the creatures may find the sound waves irritating, they will stay underground and avoid the sound. This range of ultrasonic products has been in the market for quite some time as repellents for armadillos with a sales pitch that the sound emitted is unbearable for them. It has also been used as a mole deterrent, too. The effect of these products has not been proved successfully.

Despite numerous options available for choosing armadillo repellents, none of them can be deemed as absolutely effective in driving them away. Expert wildlife trappers feel that there is no guarantee that the armadillo repellents available in stores and markets will work. Unfortunately, there are no magic sprays available in the sores to repel armadillos from your property. If the repellents prove ineffective, the conventional method of trapping and relocating armadillos may work.
