Squirrels: Types, Appearance, biology, life cycle, habitat, diet and behaviors - Squirrels are one of the world’s most common animal. Found on all continents, there are over 200 different types of squirrel. These animals greatly vary in size and color; from small and mouse-like to flying giants. They can also be found in various habitats in the world from tropical rainforests, desolate deserts and even as household pets! Below are a few of the most common and interesting types of Squirrel:

Red squirrel:
The most common type of squirrel in North America. It was once the most common in Europe but diseases and hunting wiped out most of its population giving first place to the grey squirrel. The red squirrel has a reddish brown coat and is on average 18 to 20 inches and weighs between 1-3 pounds. Red squirrels are omnivores and will eat seeds, nuts, berries and some small insects/reptiles. A red squirrel reaches maturity in one year and can produce offspring twice a year. Red squirrels commonly live in trees but can also live in bushes. While not recommended red squirrels can also be found as pets.

Grey Squirrel:
The most common squirrel in Florida, the grey squirrel’s fur can also appear to have a brown or reddish hue to it with white fur on its stomach. This squirrel is smaller than the red squirrel and can range between 18-20 inches and weigh 1/3- 2 lbs. The grey squirrels a scavenger and will scurry around looking for nuts and berries. Once it finds food it will bury or hoards its food in its home saving them for long winters up north, or the non-existent winters down here. While a small animal they are strong, fast and sturdy able to ascend and descend head first on trees. The Boca Raton grey squirrel is mature at year 1. Like its cousin the red squirrel it can also produce offspring up to twice a year. Like other squirrels the offspring are born completely helpless and rely on mothers help and milk.

The California ground squirrel:
A small and smart creature, its average size is only 5 inches long and weighs less than ½ a pound! These adorable animals feed mostly on nuts and berries but will happily beg humans for food. They have even been caught stealing from purses set on the ground or wall ledge! California ground squirrels do not live in trees or attics, but burrow in the ground. They live in communes or groups each one digs its own entrance, that way when one tunnel is blocked or collapses the group still has an exit. Ground squirrels breed twice a year. Like other squirrels their young are born blind and helpless and rely on the female for everything. As adorable and seemingly friendly as these little creature are ground squirrels are also a carrier of the bubonic plague, a disease transmittable to humans and should never be touched.

Flying squirrels:
You have probably seen these interesting animals on television (Rocky and Bullwinkle. A fairly large squirrel up to 14 inches long, flying squirrels may seem to fly but they are actually gliding long distances, up to 90 meters between trees. Their ability to glide comes from a membrane connected to heir paws called the Patageum, which look like wings or a parachute. Flying squirrels are nocturnal (awake and hunt at night) mammals, except for a few weeks of the year when their offspring are born. These squirrels live high up in trees during the day and glide down at night looking for bugs, berries or nuts. As cute as they can be it is impossible to domesticate a flying squirrel (cannot be a pet). They also carry an extremely deadly form of Typhus which is transmittable to humans.

African Pigmy Squirrel:
The smallest squirrel is the African pigmy squirrel. Resembling a mouse more than a squirrel the African Pygmy averages only 70 millimeters. These squirrels do not hoard their food like most species of squirrel but instead scavenge for food all day eating as they go, bringing back food only for their young. Not much is known about the African Pygmy Squirrels polygamous mating system, lifecycle or offspring.

Laotian Giant flying squirrel:
Only recently discovered as the largest type of squirrel the Laotian Giant Flying Squirrel has been measured 4 feet long! Discoveries are currently being made and not much is known about this elusive creature.
