About Opossum: Biology, Life Cycle, Behavior, Diet and Habitat
Opossums, also called as possums, have a scientific name of Didelphimorph. They are the largest group of Marsupial in the western part of the globe. Specifically, their group has 19 genera and 103 different species. They are well known is the US and in Australia because of their persistent presence in these regions. The term opossum literally refers to as “white dog”. This term originated from the Powhatan tribe in Virginia Algonquian. The term is first read during 1607 in Jamestown by Sir John Smith and his companion William Strachey. The other meaning of possum is “White beast”. They live in abundant number because they easily adapt to their environment. They have flexible diet which is essential to successful reproduction. They are also intelligent colonizers, as well.

Different characteristics of opossums
Gray short-tailed opossum - Monodelphis domestica is also called the grey short-tailed opossum. They could grow in to small and medium-sized according to the common size of marsupials. The most common comparison is the domesticated cat. This variety may live above the ground, or as termed as arboreal. Sometimes, they also live on land. Most of the possums from this group have long snouts. Their skulls, especially the brain case area is narrow. They have more number of teeth than most mammals do. They have unusually small incisors. The molars and canines are large. Because of the large size of molars, they are tricuspid in nature. The stance of this mammal is like of the modern monkeys which are termed as plantigrade. This means that their feet are flat on the ground while walking. They have no claw. They have hair that is thick. Females have pouches as the unique characteristic of marsupials. They carry their young inside as they walk around. The feet and the tails have scuttles as a result of walking upright. Internal organs such as the stomach are consisted of simple cecum. The male reproductive organ is forked. Opossums’ immunity is highly specialized. They are not affected by the bites of rattlesnakes or vipers. They are also clean because they do not have as much rabies as dogs and cats even if they life in the wild. The ration of having rabies is one in a hundred.

Diet of opossums
The type of diet of this group of animals is generally omnivore. Every variety only varied in the amount of food they eat. Example, the members of Caluromyinae prefer fruits. This is different from Patagonian opossum which prefer eating animals rather than plants. The yapok variety, which has a scientific name of Chironectes minimums, is particularly unique over other kinds of opossums because they are semi-aquatic marsupial. Nature groomed them to be partially aquatic because they have adapted webbed hind limbs. They are master divers in freshwater. They feed on mollusks and crayfish. Scansorial variey are the opposite yapok. They live in trees for most of their lives. Glironiinae are also arboreal. Metachirus, Monodelphis, and Didelphis live on land.

Opossum reproduction
Opossum has the distinct reproductive system of the marsupials. They have a divided reproductive system. These are uterus and marsupial. Like humans, their menstrual cycle is also 28 days on the normal and average interval. They develop placenta during conception. However, their placenta is the simple type which does not last over the full term of pregnancy. It is not fully functional that can support the fetus within the entire duration of pregnancy. This compels the reproduction cycle to deliver have the baby delivered and be transfered into the marsupium for complete development. The marsupials sack is the place where the fetus stays and nourished. After 70 and 125 days, the baby opossum is detached and weaned. Then, they will live away from their mother to adulthood for two to four years. On the average, 4 years is the longest life span of opossum. The body structure of opossum has distinction between males and female Boca Raton opossum. The males are larger than females. They also have larger teeth and robust chests.

Behavior of opossums
Opossums do not travel so much from one place to another. They love to stay in one area as long as they can survive because of the availability of food and water. They are typically good at settling. They also love to take over a hole. They do not dig much. No wonder they do not develop sharp digging claws and fingers. They live in groups and they are protective of their young. The behavior of opossum is nocturnal. They prefer the protective comfort of the night and they want to be under their burrow. They seldom go up on land. They have the dramatic ability to play dead when faced by a predator. Not only that they look dead, they also have the ability to look and smell like dead. This defense mechanism is developed as an involuntary response from psychological reaction. However, this play dead ability is not developed in early stages. Because of this, the baby opossum are often killed by their enemies. Opossum’s biological processes are so unique. Although they are the largest group of marsupials, they exhibit many similarities and the characteristics of their family.
